In our first evening kick off, SANDS United Cardiff secured a maiden victory in a competitive friendly match against USW Old Boys at the wonderful USW Sports Complex in Trefforrest.
With a large squad assembled, there was a confident air amongst the SANDS boys prior to kick off, and this shone through in the early exchanges, where SANDS started well, enjoying the lions share of possession.
Lacking a cutting edge initially in front of goals though, it was the opposition who drew first blood with the first goal against the run of play.
Not to be deterred, United were soon level with a thunderbolt from our own Stephen G to draw level, and it wasn’t long before a clinical free kick from Rikki took SANDS to a 2-1 lead at the interval.
The 2nd half ebbed and flowed, with USW finding a little more time on the ball, however it was SANDS who found the net next with another well taken shot right in the corner from Stephen giving the keeper no chance.
USW determined not to outdone then had a sustained period of possession, and awarded themselves a penalty after a defender was adjudged to have handled in the box. The resulting spot kick was neatly slotted home making it 3-2.
The game continued at a fast pace and a good break from USW saw them draw level before a wonder strike from Dave found the top corner. Not even Big Nev could have saved that one!
The confidence returned to the SANDS boys, and Stephen neatly secured his well deserved hat-trick with a well taken goal from a clinical through ball. 5-3 to United.
USW continued to press, and were rewarded with a 4th when a quick break followed by some neat interplay further up the field from them saw them make it 5-4 and ensuring a nervy finish.
Determined not to let the lead slip though, the SANDS team gave their all until the last, and saw out the remainder of the game for a maiden victory
Well played all, and thank you to the opposition for a well spirited and competitive match up.
No rest for SAND United Cardiff though, as we will be back in action on Saturday as we face St Albans AFC at Tremorfa Park.
