16th April 2019
And so it begins
On Sunday 14th April 2019, SANDS United – Cardiff played their first match. A momentous occasion for all involved.
Having only formed a matter of weeks ago, and with just two training sessions in the bag, the guys were looking forward to a game of football, to support one another, and help sow the seeds for what will come before us.
Our opponents for the day were Cardiff Northern Old Boys.
In a competitive match played in a wonderful spirit throughout, it was our opponents who opened the scoring with a swift counter attack down the right hand side catching the SANDS defence off guard before a neat finish past the helpless Keeper.
Not allowing heads to drop, SANDS United settled into their game plan, and following some sustained pressure, a mistake in the Northern defence following a corner saw their defender put the ball in his own net to bring the scores back level.
Spurred on by the goal, Utd kept the pressure on, and it wasn’t long unit they found themselves (unexpectedly) in front when a neat finish by Rikki beat the keeper at the near post. 2-1 to the SANDS boys greeted with cheers of jubilation from the home crowd massive.
The game continued to ebb back and forth, but is it was Northern who drew the next blood, with some neat interplay catching the SANDS Utd rearguard out of position. 2-2 at the break.
A series of substitutions followed, and the 2nd half continued very much in the same vein as the 1st. Both teams having their share of possession, and creating chances.
It wasn’t until the 65th minute that Northern took control of the game. Sensing the SANDS boys tiring after what was the 1st time on an 11-a-side pitch for many of the team for quite some time, they managed 3 quick goals to put the tie to bed.
Not to be dis-spirited though, the SANDS boys carried on going to the end, and a stunning free kick from a full 30 yards saw a third goal for the newly formed team.
It wasn’t long until the ref blew the final whistle though, and the game ended with a 5-3 victory to our guests.
It may not have been a win, that in fairness, none of us were expecting, but it was a hugely enjoyable (and significant) occasion for all the players.
Thanks to all who took part, whether players, spectators, officials etc.
We are now very much looking forward to the next outing.
